Love Relationships
Liking – a desire to interact with a person
Loving – far more complicated, intimate, often including passion, romance, companionship, infatuation and sexual attraction.
Kinds of Love
? Passionate (or romantic) love:
is an intensely emotional state and a confusion of feelings: tenderness, sexuality, elation and pain, anxiety and relief, altruism and jealousy.
? Companionate love:
is a less intense emotion, combining feelings of friendly affection and deep attachment.
6 Types of Love
Eros: Passionate love. All consuming & physical
Storge: Companionate. Companionship
Ludus: Game playing. Love to win, short term
Mania: Possessive love. Intense, jealous obsession
Pragma: Logical love. Considered and compatible
Agape: Selfless love. Unconditional
Three factor theory of love
Three variables underlie the experience of love:
Easily confused with arousal related to fear, anger , joy, and sexual arousal.
Social matching Accounts for the way people are attracted to partners of approximately the same level of social desirability.
Love is contained by incest taboos and unavailability judgements regarding those already in relationships.
Variables linked to marital stability and satisfaction – education, employment, supportive behaviour, sharing of social group.
Companionate love developing once romantic love recedes.
Commitment is critical.
Role complementarity requires role negotiation.
Ending A Relationship
Factors indicating the end of a relationship:
1.A new life seems to be the only solution.
2.Alternative partners are available.
3.There is an expectation that the relationship will fail.
4.There is a lack of commitment to a continuing relationship.
